RANDOLPH – Linn got off to a winning start at the Blue Valley preseason basketball tournament on Thursday, Friday and Saturday. They got an overtime win against Blue Valley and a blowout win against Onaga, before falling hard to Wetmore on Saturday.

Free throws give Linn overtime win

RANDOLPH – The Linn girls led for most of the game against Blue Valley during Thursday’s first round of the Blue Valley pre-season basketball tournament at Randolph. They were ahead 24-17 at half, but the Rams had a strong third quarter and with 4:11 left in the game, they tied the score at 34-34.

Linn fell behind late in the game, struggling from the free throw line. With 17 seconds left, Kendra Damman grabbed a rebound and was fouled. She made one of two free throws to move to within one, 40-41. After a Blue Valley free throw and a time out because of a game clock problem, with 8.3 seconds left, Linn shot and missed, but Damman again got the rebound and put it in to tie the game, putting it into overtime.

Turnovers plagued the team, but their defense stood up, stopping the Rams from scoring in overtime. Megan Beier got fouled on a rebound and made a free throw to take the lead and Lindsay Mueller made a 2-pointer to go up three with 1:19 left. On the next Rams’ possession, Ella Thalmann blocked a shot and then got the rebound and was fouled. She made the first free throw to go up 46-42, and missed the second, but grabbed the rebound and was fouled again. She again made the first and missed the second and time ran out with Linn getting a 47-42 overtime win.

Damman and Sophia Bott led the team with 11 points each, while Beier had 13 rebounds and eight assists.
