Darrel C. Portenier, 88, formerly of Washington, died Nov. 18, 2020, at the Linn Community Nursing Home.

Darrel Clare Portenier was born July 28, 1932, on a farmstead near Guide Rock, Neb. He was the first born of Ralph and Norma (Burwell) Portenier.

After high school, he began working as a depot agent for the Burlington Northern Railroad. His first assignment was Morrowville.

He married Evelyn Mayberry on Oct. 23, 1955. The couple had 8 children.

They moved around often when working with the railroad. He was an elder at the Christian church in Morrowville for many years.

Preceding him in death were his parents, Ralph and Norma; his wife, Evelyn; and brother, Gary Portenier.

Survivors include his children, Debora (Arnold) Brown, Shari (Scott) Jacobsen, Brad (Donna) Portenier, Doug (Carrie) Portenier, Clayton (Tushaun) Portenier, Lori (Matt) Miller, Troy (Kelly) Portenier, Lisa (Jeff) Sweetser; brother, Gail (Gloria) Portenier; and sister-in-law, Wanda Portenier; 28 grandkids and 41 great-grandkids.

A funeral service was Nov. 21 at the Morrowville Christian Church. Rev. Ron Brown officiated. Musicians were Lonnie Portenier, Amber Dux and Adam Miller. Music was “Blessed Assurance,” “Mansion Over the Hilltop,” “Jesus Loves Me” and “When the Roll is Called Up Yonder.”

Pallbearers were Evan Brown, Bryce Brown, Adam Miller, Isaac Miller, Cole Portenier, Calvin Portenier, Garret Portenier, Ethan Sweetser, Lavan Sweetser and Josiah Portenier.

Burial was in the Dale Friends Cemetery, Enosdale.

A Memorial fund is established to the Morrowville Christian Church. Contributions may be sent in care of Ward Funeral Home, Washington.
