Corrine Alberta Hansen, 98, died at the Linn Community Nursing Home on August 7, 2021.

She was born February 17, 1923, to Albert and Mae Hansen, of Greenleaf. She attended Maplewood Grade School from 1929-1937 before graduating from Barnes High School in 1941. After receiving her RN diploma from St. Luke’s School of Nursing in 1945, she joined the Army Nurses Corp. By January 1946 she had set sail for Germany on a troop ship. Her Army nursing assignments in Germany were hospitals in Heidelberg, Rheinau and Bremerhaven. She came home to the USA in 1947and was discharged that year as a First Lieutenant and received the WWII Victory Medal and the Army Occupation Medal, while serving her country.

Her first job as a civilian was working at the Children’s Hospital in Detroit, Mich., for a year. Then she returned to schooling at the University of Colorado, Boulder. She was recalled to active duty in 1950 and served at Camp Carson, Colo., for two years. While serving the Army in Colorado, she also was able to finish her graduate studies, receiving a bachelor’s degree in Public Health Nursing in 1951 from Colorado State University.

After discharge she began work as a nurse at the Veteran’s Administration Hospital, Topeka. She later began working at the VA Hospital, Denver, Colo., until 1959. She then returned to her home state and worked at the VA Hospital in Topeka once again until her retirement in 1981.

Survivors include sisters Margy Toler, Redmond, WA; Reeva Anderson and Marilyn (Jim) Deckinger, both of Wichita, brother Paul (Eileen) Hansen, Greenleaf, and brother-in-law Frank Werder, Kansas City.

Preceding her in death were brother, Norman Hansen; sister, Dolores Soto-Werder; brother-in-law Randy Anderson; and brother-in-law Bill Toler.

A memorial service in Greenleaf will be held in the fall.
