LINN – A last second 3-pointer gave the Linn boys their first win of the season – a 42-41 victory over #8 state-ranked Axtell. The teams met up on Friday in Linn in their final game before Christmas break.

The first half was a backand-forth event, with several lead changes and ties. Linn had a lead late in the second quarter, but Axtell hit an outside 2-pointer and a 3-pointer to take the lead, 18-17, at half. The Eagles were up seven on Linn after the third quarter.

Senior Trent Beier sank a 3-pointer to start the fourth quarter, and then with under 30 seconds to go, freshman Gavin Turk hit a 3-pointer to climb to within two points, 39-41. Linn fouled quickly, putting Axtell at the free throw line. The player missed the shot and Linn took the ball down before calling a time out with 5.7 seconds left.

Set up in front of the Linn bench, senior Keaton Bargman threw the ball in to Beier near the top of the key, who made a move and drew defenders, opening up Bargman at the corner. He popped a deep 3-pointer and drained it for a 42-41 score as the clock ran out and the team celebrated.

Bargman had three of the team’s seven 3-pointers on his way to a team-leading 15 points.

Linn only shot six free throws in the game, making three, while Axtell went six for 15 from the line.

LINN – The Axtell girls were on fire to start their game at Linn on Friday. They hit three 3-pointers and a free throw to take a 10-8 lead over the Bulldogs after the first quarter. Linn was able to work their way back into the game, however, tying the score at 12-12 midway through the second quarter. Linn got into foul trouble, however, and Axtell made 5 of 7 free throws in the second quarter to take a 19-16 lead. Linn’s shooting was cold.

Sophia Bott sank a 3-pointer to start the second half and Kyrah Peters followed with one of her own to take Linn’s first lead of the game, 22-19.

It was back and forth, but Linn was able to hold onto the lead for a 38-34 win.

Bott led all scorers with 14 points, while Peters (in her first game back from injury) had 11. No other stats were available.
