Norma M. Nelson, 92, of Washington, died Nov. 15, 2020, at the Centennial Homestead Nursing Home.

She was born on a farm near Norway in Republic County on June 28, 1928, to Wesley R. Ames and Mary Alice Ames (Jackson). She grew up on the family farm in Republic County.

She attended Concordia High School and graduated as a member of the Class of 1946. She worked as a telephone operator in Concordia. She married her husband, LaVerne, at the First Baptist Church in Concordia on Dec. 5, 1948. They soon moved to Washington where he worked for the Soil Conservation Office.

She was a stay at home mother and was a member of the Washington County Chorus and sang in the church choir. She was also a member of Modern Pioneer (G.F.W.C.) women’s club. She worked for the Cloud County Treasurer’s office for several years before she retired.

She was a member of The Baptist Church in Concordia.

She is survived by her son, Leland (Lee) (Cindy) Nelson, of Manhattan; daughter, Marcia (Ron) Funke, of Washington, and son, Kenny (Brenda) Nelson, of Washington, sisters-in-law, Anita Nelson, of Concordia, Regina Nelson, of Concordia, and Ramona Dibley, of Modesto, Calif., and brother-in-law, Darrell Nelson, of Concordia. She has 4 grandchildren and 9 great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents, and husband, LaVerne, in 1979, and granddaughter Lacy Deters.

Visitation will be from 2 to 8 p.m. on Wednesday, Nov. 18, at Ward Funeral Home in Washington.

A graveside funeral service will be 11 a.m., Thursday, Nov. 19, at Pleasant Hill Cemetery, Concordia. Rev Jonathan Peppers will officiate.

Burial will be in Pleasant Hill Cemetery.

The family suggests memorials to Centennial Homestead in Washington for an emergency COVID relief fund or to The First Baptist Church in Concordia. Memorials may be sent to Ward Funeral Home in Washington.
