Local teams claim Twin Valley League titles

Washington County will compete at the 2A regional meet at Herington, while Linn, Hanover and Clifton-Clyde will compete at the 1A regional meet at Valley Heights. The top four finishers in each event qualify for the Kansas State Track & Field Championships on May 30-31 in Wichita.

Three school records set at Mankato meet

MANKATO – One Washington County High School record and two Linn school records fell at the Grizzly Invitational on Friday in Mankato. The weather was as beneficial as it has been at any meet this year, and athletes were able to respond with top notch performances. WCHS junior Erin Alexander broke her own school record in the shot put, that she set last week, by throwing 43-1. Her record from May 2 was 41-8 1/2.

Junior high squads end season with league meet

The Clifton-Clyde seventh grade girls won the team title at the junior high Blue Valley League meet on Thursday at Valley Heights. Local teams took second in all the other divisions, but Valley Heights won the eighth grade girls and boys and Luckey (Manhattan) won the seventh grade boys team titles. The meet was the final junior high track event for the squads.

WCHS golfers second in Twin Valley League

Washington County golfers Hunter Johnson and Evan Ouellette took third and fourth respectively at the Twin Valley League golf tournament on Monday at Seneca. Johnson actually tied for second with an 86, but took third after a playoff. Ouellette tied with an 88, but won his playoff round to take fourth.

Washington County boys win Nemaha Valley meet

SENECA – Another school record fell and the Washington County boys won the Nemaha Valley track meet on Tuesday which includes mostly larger schools. Washington County junior Dylan Hodgson followed up his record-breaking performance in the 800 and mile at the Beloit Relays to break his own two mile school record at Seneca. He ran a 9:43.71 to beat his 2013 record.

FRANKFORT – Linn’s 4x100 boys and girls relay teams are creeping up on their respective school records. Both teams set season best times at a small meet in Frankfort on Tuesday. The Linn girls dropped their time to 51.20, which is their fastest time in the last two seasons where they’ve been in the state rankings. They are now tied with Pike Valley with the top time in Class 1A in Kansas.

MANHATTAN – A Linn sprinter’s run for a school record resulted in a near miss, but actually spurred a record run by a Hanover sprinter during the Manhattan Small Schools Meet on Thursday. Linn senior Kurt Van der Merwe decided to sit out all of his normal sprinting events before the 400 meter dash in order to try to go after the 1978 Linn school record by Mark Simcox, who ran a 50.5 second quarter-mile.

Hanover teams take second at Frankfort Invite

Andrew Bruna was a member of the gold medal 4x400 relay team and the silver medal 4x100 relay team for Hanover at Frankfort on Friday.

FRANKFORT – The Hanover boys and girls track teams took second place, both coming in behind Centralia on Friday at Frankfort. On the boys’ side, gold medals were claimed by Evan Zabokrtsky in the 200, Preston Jueneman in the 400 and both the 4x400 and 4x800 relay teams. Members of the 4x400 meter relay are Andrew Bruna, Zabokrtsky, P. Jueneman and Austin Diederich. Members of the 4x800 team are Trey Lohse, Paden Pralle, Michael Jueneman and Adam Zarybnicky.

Alexander signs to continue basketball career in Florida

Jordyn Alexander, a 2012 graduate of Washington County High School, recently signed an NCAA National Letter of Intent to attend Eckerd College in St. Petersburg, Fla. CONCORDIA — Cloud County Community College women’s basketball standout Jordyn Alexander has signed an NCAA National Letter of Intent to attend Eckerd College in St. Petersburg, Fla. Alexander, a 6’0” sophomore forward from Washington, ended her career at Cloud as the Lady Thunderbirds seventh all-time leading scorer with 898 career points.

Tigers compete in three golf tourneys in last week

The Washington County Tigers golf team started a busy week of golf last Tuesday at the Republic County Invitational golf tourney in Belleville. The two-man team of Hunter Johnson and Evan Ouellette scored a combined 187 to place third as a team at the large meet. Johnson shot a 90 and Ouellette shot a 97 on the day.
