Hanover wins state championship for the third straight year

The Hanover Wildcats cheerleaders perform during the state championship game.

Hanover won their third state championship in a row on Saturday, putting the Wildcats in elite company in 8-man football in Kansas. Only two other teams have won at least three state titles in a row in 8-man football since state championship games were first held in 1969.

Scandia won in 1970, 1971 and 1972 when there was just one division of 8-man football.

Denton-Midway won five in a row between the two 8-man divisions. They won in 1984 (D1), 1985 and 1986 (D2), 1987 (D1) and 1988 (D2).

Hanover claimed their third crown in a row (and five overall including their 2008 and 2009 championships) with a 58-50 win over Osborne in the Division 2 championship game on Saturday at Newton.

This high-scoring matchup set a record for the most combined points in an eight-man title game.
