The 2015 Linn High School girls’ track team achieved a milestone for their school last weekend at the Kansas High School Track and Field Championships in Wichita The Lady Bulldogs became the first female team to win a state title, in any sport.

Washington County track teams compete at Regionals

Washington County High School will be well represented at this year’s Kansas State Track and Field championships Friday and Saturday in Wichita. Twenty-two individuals and three relay teams qualified for the state meet after placing in the top four of their respective events last Friday at a Class 2A regional track meet in Washington. WCHS dominated the boys team race, scoring 173 points, good for first place. Second place went to Maranatha Academy which finished with 78 points. Senior Dylan Hodgson was a triple gold medal winner, running to first-place finishes in the 800, 1,600 and 3,200 meter wins. Hodgson is the defending Class 2A champion in all three races. He also owns the state-meet record in the 1,600 and 3,200.

Hanover, Linn and Clifton-Clyde compete in 1A Regionals

Track athletes from Hanover, Linn and Clifton-Clyde high schools earned the right to showcase their talent this weekend in Wichita after placing in the top four at a Class 1A regional meet last Friday at Valley Heights. Those who qualified will now compete against the best of the best at the Kansas State Track and Field championships Friday and Saturday at Wichita. The Hanover High School boys qualified six in individual events, plus three relay teams en route to their first-place team finish. Evan Zabokrtsky earned the gold medal in two events at the regional meet, winning both the 100- and 200-meter dashes. Preston Jueneman placed first in the 400-meter run and third in the 200.

Stegman earns all-conference softball honors at Washburn

Megan Stegman, a sophomore outfielder for the Washburn Ichabods softball team, was recently named as an all-MIAA (Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletic Association) team selection by the conference coaches.

Hunter Johnson finishes 13th at regionals, qualifies for state golf tournament

Hunter Johnson, a junior on the Washington County High School golf team, claimed the last individual qualifying spot at a Class 2A regional golf meet Monday at Herington. Johnson, tied for 13th after carding a 95. He will now compete in the Class 2A state golf tournament Monday, May 26, at Emporia.

After the last baton was handed off, it was the Linn High School girls’ and the Washington County High School boys’ track teams that had captured their respective titles in the Twin Valley League track meet last Thursday at Washington, hosted by Linn.

Area track athletes participate at the Rock Hills Invitational

The Linn High School girls’ track team ran, jumped and threw their way to a first-place finish at the Rock Hills Invitational meet last Friday at Mankato. LHS senior Kendra Bargman won the 100- and 200-meter dashes, Shelby Ohlde took first in the high jump, Kaylie Rahe had the best time in the 300-meter hurdles, and Brooke Diederich took first place in the long jump. Linn also won two relays. The 4x100 combined for a winning time behind the running of Karsyn Smith, Diederich, Kesiah Thalmann and Bargman. The 4x400 relay also had the top time. On that relay were Rachel Bott, Ohlde, Thalmann and Bargman.

Eagle girls take home 3rd at the Thompson Relays

Scoring 94 points, the Clifton-Clyde High School girls’ track team took third place at the Thompson Relays, May 8 at Lincoln. Elizabeth Nobert and Kourtni Hubert were both double goldmedal winners. Nobert won the 300 hurdles and the high jump, while Hubert claimed first in the javelin and shot put. On the boys’ side, Brian Reese claimed first place in the pole vault. “Lincoln is a good meet where we usually have success,” said coach Kieran Wurtz. “We had numerous medal winners on both the boys and girls teams. I think we are ready for Thursday’s league meet.”
