Penning and Thompson connect for 3 TD’s as Tigers take down Troy

The Washington County High School football team scored five touchdowns — three in the air and two on the ground — en route to a 36-18 Twin Valley League victory over Troy in opening action last Friday at Washington. The first quarter saw Konnor Penning connect with Cole Thompson on a 48-yard pass play. In the second period, Penning scored on a 3-yard run, then threw to Thompson for two more touchdowns, one for 14 yards and one for 47. In the final period, Penning scampered four yards for the touchdown.

Eagles falter to start season

The Clifton-Clyde High School volleyball team was one of three teams competing in a triangular Tuesday evening at Linn. The Eagles played hard and had some close games, but were unable to secure a victory.

Linn splits at home opener

The Linn High School volleyball team opened the 2015 season Tuesday by hosting Frankfort and Clifton-Clyde in a Twin Valley League triangular. The Lady Bulldogs lost their opening match against Frankfort, 21-25, 25-12, 15-25. Liza van der Merwe led scoring with 21 points over the three games. Kaitlin Ohlde served five points. Kaitlin Ohlde also had nine kills and two blocks. van der Merwe was credited with 15 set assists. Three players finished with five kills each Karsyn Smith, Brooke Diederich and Hanna Bott. Maggie Bott was credited with five set assists and Smith had three blocks.

Tiger Cheer brings home honors

The Washington County High School (WCHS) cheer squad attended the Universal Cheerleaders Association   summer cheer camp July 21-24 at Butler County Community College in El Dorado. Cheer squad members spent the week learning cheers, chants, dances and stunts. During the week, the squad received thespirit stick, a gold ribbon for their fight song performance and several blue ribbons for cheer and chant evaulations. On the final day, camp competitions were held for all squads. The WCHS cheer squad received the first place trophy for band dance, the second place trophy for extreme routine and the small superior squad trophy.

Wetmore is TVL’s newest 8-man football program

BY DAN THALMANN/ Publisher WETMORE – The Twin Valley League will have a new  8-man football member nextfall. Wetmore, who is currently a TVL participant in all of the other sports, has started a new 8-man program this year after competing with Centralia for over a decade as part of a cooperative sports agreement. The Cardinals’ new program will compete this fall in several varsity and junior varsity games,but will not be eligible to compete in the post-season because  football is in the middle of a twoyearscheduling cycle.

Help support your Tiger sports teams

WASHINGTON – The Washington County High School Booster Club will help kick off the Tiger sports season with a barbecue and sports scrimmages on Friday,  Aug. 28, at the WCHS Football Stadium. The evening will begin  with a high school volleyball scrimmage at 5 p.m. in the high school gym. The barbecue  meal will begin serving at 5:30 p.m. and continue to 7 p.m. The fundraiser meal will  include sloppy joes, baked beans, chips, cookies and  drink. The cost for adults or students is $5 each and preschool and under is $2 each.  All fall sports athletes, coaches  and managers eat free.

Sweets claim Palmer co-ed soft ball league crown

The Sweets beat Broke Bat Mountain in a battle of undefeateds on Sunday night in the Palmer Co-ed Softball League championship game. The score went back and forth throughout the game, but Sweets won 17-15 in  seven innings of play.
