Maxine Chadbourn

Maxine J. Chadbourn, 85, died Thursday, Jan. 8, 2015, at Wesley Medical Center, Wichita. Survivors include daughters: Paula Fuoss and husband, Jim, Bartlett, Ill., Loree Nichols and husband, Lee, Sedgwick, Janelle Case and husband, Ray, Manhattan, Michelle Mundhenk and husband, Kent, Papua, New Guinea; daughter-in-law, Beth Ann Breen and husband, Doug, Tucson, Ariz.; 12 grandchildren and 16 great-grandchildren. A funeral service was Tuesday, Jan. 13 at Pleasant Valley Church, rural Sedgwick, with Pastors Paul Wulff and Robert Varner officiating. Burial followed at Lebanon Cemetery,
Pretty Prairie. Memorials may be given to Pleasant Valley Church in care of Kaufman Funeral Home, Halstead.

Esther Mueller

Esther Mueller, 96, died Jan. 2, 2015, on her 96th birthday, at the Suites of Someren Glen in Centennial, Colo. She was born Jan. 2, 1919, in Washington to Frank and Lena (Merritt) Gressman.She graduated from Washington High School, attended business school in Lincoln, Neb. and worked in the Washington County welfare officefor six years prior to being a homemaker for many years. She married Quentin Hugo (Q. H.) Mueller in Oskaloosa on Nov. 12, 1943, and they were married for 35 years prior to his death in 1979.She lived in Washington for most of her life and was a member of Good Shepherd Lutheran Church, Eastern Star and Fidelia Literary Club. She also enjoyed a variety of volunteer work.

Leland Elliott

Leland W. Elliott, 82, Manhattan, died Saturday, Jan. 10, 2015, at the Good Shepherd Hospice House in Manhattan. He was born Sept. 26, 1932, in rural Hallowell, the son of Ernest and Maxine (Bramlette) Elliott. He grew up on the family farm near Oswego, attended the local schools and was a 1950 graduate of Oswego High School. He was in the Army Signal Corps for two years and served in Austria and France.On Dec. 30, 1960, he married Karen L. Waser at the Methodist Church in Washington.He received a Bachelor of Science in Agricultural Economics in 1958 and a Master of Science in Agricultural Economics in 1962 from Kansas State University. While attending KSU, he was a member of Farm House Fraternity and Collegiate 4-H. Following graduation, he worked for the Cooperative Extension Service for three years. He opened a Real Estate Officein Washington and was a Real Estate Broker for 10 years.

Vern Larsen

Vern E. Larsen, 77, died Monday, Jan. 5, 2015, at his home. Survivors are his children, Tony Larsen and wife, Emily, Washington, Melissa Murray and husband, Rich, Barnes, Jeremy Larsen, Phoenix City, Ala.; stepchildren, Jerry Hartley, Wymore, Neb., Bill Hartley and wife, Gladys, Virginia, Neb., Rita Hartley Kerns, Lincoln, Neb., Rick Hartley and wife, Valerie, Twin Falls, Idaho, Dennis Hartley and wife, Bertha, South Dakota, and Kim Hartley, Wymore, Neb.; and many grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. on Wednesday, Jan. 7 at Ward Funeral Home, Washington. The family will receive friends from 5 to 7 p.m. A funeral service will be at 10:30 a.m. on Thursday, Jan. 8 at Morrowville Christian Church, Morrowville. Burial is private. A memorial fund has been established and will be designated by the family later. Contributions may be sent in care of the Ward Funeral Home, Washington.

Delbert Buss

Delbert Buss, 90, Linn, died Wednesday, Dec. 31, 2014, at the Linn Community Nursing Home. He was born on the family farm northwest of Linn on Oct. 12, 1924, to George and Lena (Hesterberg) Buss. On Oct. 19, 1924, he was baptized at St. Paul Lutheran Church, Palmer, by Pastor Henry Kolm and was confi rmed on Palm Sunday, April 2, 1939, also at Palmer. He attended Reiter School, which was just across the section from the Buss home. He began working on his family’s farm at a young age and continued to farm and raise livestock the remainder of his life, helping his son in the later years. On Oct. 16, 1949, he married Geraldine Olson at her parents’ home near Linn. She preceded him in death on Jan. 2, 2006. He was also preceded in death by his parents; sister, Laverna Uffman; brother-in-law, Edgar Uffman. Survivors include his son, Warren Buss, Linn; daughter, Geryl Carlson and husband, Eric, Clay Center; brother, Erwin Buss, Kansas City, Mo.; and one grandson.

Roger Moddelmog, Sr.

Roger Wayne Moddelmog, Sr., 66, Clearwater, died Tuesday, Dec. 23, 2014, at the Clearwater Nursing and Rehabilitation Center. Survivors include his children, Julie Scheer and husband, Jerod, Denver, Colo., and Roger Wayne Moddelmog, Jr. and wife, Leann, Derby; brothers, Ken Moddelmog and wife, Carole, Greeley, Colo., Ralph Moddelmog and wife, Maletta, Omaha, Neb., and Bruce Moddelmog and wife, Cindy, Johnstown, Colo.; and five grandchildren. A funeral service was at Ward Funeral Home on Monday, Dec. 29. Pastor Timothy Lorenz offi ciated. Sheila Ouellette was organist, and the congregation sang “Amazing Grace” and “Rock of Ages.” Pallbearers were Bruce Moddelmog, Ken Moddelmog, Ralph Moddelmog, Jeff Moddelmog, Roger Wayne Moddelmog, Jr. and Jerrod Scheer. Burial was in Zion Lutheran Cemetery, Linn. A memorial fund is established and will be designated by the family. Contributions may be sent in care of Ward Funeral Home, Washington.

Charles Rand

Charles Edward Rand, 93, Clyde, died Dec. 26, 2014, at Park Villa Nursing Home, Clyde. Survivors include his wife, Patricia Rand, Clifton; daughter, Lori Ranker and husband Greg Schaller, Lawrence; stepdaughters, Linda Kegle, and husband Harold, Clyde, Cheryl Stevens, Gulf Port, Miss., Paula Tatum and husband, Paul, Concordia; step-son, Patrick LeBlanc and wife, Terri, Lyons; three grandchildren; eight stepgrandchildren and eight stepgreat-grandchildren. Helen Leah Armstrong Waser, 75, died Wednesday, Dec. 17, 2014, at her home in Atchison.
