Charlotte Cardenas

Charlotte Anita Apodaca Cardenas, 67, of Washington, died June 28, 2014 in her home, surrounded by her husband and children. She was born Feb. 23, 1947, at St. Joseph’s Hospital in Denver, Colo., to Seferino Joe and Viola Camila (Garcia) Apodaca. At the age of 15, she had to drop out of school to help her father care for her younger siblings, following her mother’s death. She was later married to Eddie Manzola and to this union three children were born, Lisa, Jimmy and Tina. Later they separated. On May 25, 1970, she entered into marriage with Domingo Cardenas Sr., to this union eight children were born Dina, Charlotte Jr., Domingo Jr., Eusevio, Octavio, Maria, Jesus and Lupita. She had various jobs outside the home, but devoted most of her life caring for her family, children and later grandchildren.

William R. (Bill) Durrant

William R. (Bill) Durrant ,87, Lawr e n c e , died at L a w r e n c e Memorial Hospital, on Tuesday, June 17, 2014.Survivors include his wife, Donna Cook Channel Durrant, of the home; two daughters, Denise Gilges, Baldwin City, Christa Schram and husband, Thomas, Bonner Springs; two stepdaughters, Yvonne Palermo and husband, Dominic, Lawrence, and Charmaine Messick and husband, Raymond, Garnett; nine grandchildren; and one sister Alberta Parry, Washington. Funeral services with military honors were Monday, June 23 at Rumsey-Yost Funeral Home. Burial followed at Oak Hill
Cemetery. The family suggests memorials made to Fraternal Order of Police, sent in care of Rumsey-Yost Funeral Home,

Charles Wayne Canfield, 99, Clyde, died June 23, 2014, in Clay Center. Funeral services are at 10 a.m. on Thursday,  June 26 at the Turner Funeral Chapel, Clifton, with Pastor FrankLyn Schroeder officiating. Burial will be in the Miltonvale Cemetery, Miltonvale. Carol L. Mead 64, died Friday, June 20, 2014, at Schowalter Villa, Hesston. She is survived by her husband Stephen Mead of the home; son, Jay Mead and wife, Anne, Memphis; daughter, Angela Mead, Austin, Texas; brother, Charles Ryser, Haddam; two sisters, Mary Ann Fox, Ft. Collins, Colo., and Ilene Roy, San Antonio, Texas; and one granddaughter.
Funeral Mass was Wednesday, June 25 at St. Mary’s Catholic Church, Newton, with the Rev. Jim Mainzer presiding. Burial
was in St. Mary’s Catholic Cemetery, Newton. Memorials may be made to the St. Mary’s Alter Society or Harry Hynes

Doris A. Lange, 75, died Thursday, June 19, 2014 at Washington. Survivors include her son, Kent Lange, Winfield; step-sons, James Lange, Beatrice, Neb., Ronald Lange and wife, Kim, Omaha, Neb.; step-daughter, Rhonda Brinkman and husband, Jon, Palmyra, Neb.; sisters-inlaw, Opal Tobin, Marysville, Alberta (Bob) L’Ecuyer, Morrowville; 11 grandchildren
and three great-grandchildren. Visitation is from noon until 8 p.m., Wednesday, June 25 at Ward Funeral Home, Washington. The family will receive friends from 5 to 7 p.m. The funeral service is at 11 a.m., Thursday, June 26 at Ward Funeral Home, Washington. Pastor Jim Stark will officiate. Gina Miller is the organist and Wiley Alexander will sing. A private family burial will be in the Washington City Cemetery. A memorial fund is established in her name and will be designated by the family at a later date. Contributions may be sent in care of Ward Funeral Home, Washington

Marilyn Hanshaw

Marilyn Ann Hanshaw, 76, Washington, died at Stormont- Vail Hospital in Topeka on Wednesday, June 11, 2014. She was born Jan. 10, 1938 , to Carl and Urith Hardy. She graduated from Washington High School. She married Kermit Hanshaw on Feb. 16, 1957. She was a member of the Washington Christian Church. She was a co-founder of MarCon Pies, with partner Connie Allen. She had also worked for Washington Farm Bureau, Dr. Tom Parry’s dental office, and ran a home-based business making baked goods, jams and jellies. She was preceded in death by her parents; daughter, Mari Lyn; and sister, Shirley Pischer. Survivors include her husband, Kermit Hanshaw; daughters, Carla Dodd and husband, Allan, Washington, and Cally Hanshaw, Waterville; sister Lila Koch, Sterling, Colo.; and four grandchildren. A memorial service is at 4 p.m. on Friday, June 20 at the Washington Christian Church, followed by a dinner at the Christian Church Education Building.

Jimmy Shepek

Jimmy Jon Shepek, 42, Belleville, died unexpectedly at his home in Belleville on Tuesday, May 20, 2014. He was born May 17, 1972, at Fairbury, Neb., to Jimmy Joe and Joyce (Sorell) Shepek. Upon graduating with the class of 1990 at Fairbury High School, he was elected to the Board of Education for the Fairbury public schools. Four years later, he was elected to the Fairbury City Council. He was previously employed at Endicott Clay Products, Dempster Industries and most recently as a deputy with the Republic County sheriff’s department for the past 13 years. He was preceded in death by his grandparents, Joe and Leota Shepek and John Sorell. Survivors include his parents, Jim and Joyce Shepek; brother and significant other, Jory Shepek and Deb Williams; and grandmother Bernice Sorell, all of Fairbury. Funeral services were Sunday, May 25 at the United Methodist Church, Belleville, with Pastor Roger Walls officiating. Burial was in the Belleville City Cemetery.
