4H project takes entrepreneurial twist

Erin Holtmeier wanted a new challenge with 4H, or she was ready to quit. Erin, daughter of Lee and Steph Holtmeier, had been a member of the Busy Bee 4H club since she was fi rst eligible at seven years old. She had participated in a wide variety of projects, including cooking, photography, crafts, horses, bucket calves, crops and fl owers and usually brought a wide variety of projects to the fair, including some years where she had “a ridiculous number” of entries.

NEAL EHLER’S SHEEP SHOWING EFFORT DOMINATED THE COMPETITION at the WASHINGTON COUNTY FAIR

Neal Ehler has been involved with show lambs since he could walk. But his performance at the Washington County Fair last week was one of the most dominating to date. Neal, the son of Trai and Lori Ehler, won the senior showmanship contest in the sheep division, then went on to win both classes in the ewe division and the grand champion breeding ewe title.

Ohlde Seed Farms adds innovative new seed treating facility

PALMER – Ohlde Seed Farms recently completed a major expansion at their farm headquarters south of Linn with the addition of a seed treating facility. The facility is at the southeastcorner of the Ohlde Seed complex and it began operation this spring. Ohlde said the new facility will allow Ohlde Seed to provide high speed and effi cient custom seed treatment
for his customers.

Mormon Springs monument dedicated

As the American fl ag rose over a veiled stone monument a fewmiles south of Washington on Sunday afternoon, it caught the blast-furnace breeze and snapped to attention, its crisp, sharp notesseeming to summon the memory of all that had gone before, and all that had been lost.

County Fair board hopes large crowd shows up for new carnival

To secure a contract with a carnival several elements must be in place. First, the event requesting the carnival must fi t into the carnival’s booking schedule. Second, the event should fi nancially compete with other events wanting to book the carnival. Third, the event benefi ts from a reputation for supporting longevity with a carnival circuit.

Washington woman killed in accident along Highway 15

LINN – An accident southwest of Linn on Thursday resulted in the death of Sheila Krzykowski, 50, of Washington. Krzykowski was reported missing on Friday by the Washington County Sheriff’s Department. At the time of the report, she hadn’t been seen since 6 a.m. Thursday. The Washington, Linn and Palmer Fire Departments and the Washington County
CERT team assisted in the search for Krzykowski.

A powerful explosion launches an 80-pound anvil into the air at a fi eld southwest of Washington on Saturday morning. The anvil blast, which is an old Fourth of July tradition for blacksmiths, drew a large crowd to see the unusual event.

Sales tax increases by .35 percent on July 1

The Kansas state sales and use tax was increased from 6.15% to 6.5% on Wednesday in Kansas, so retailers in Washington  County will need to comply with that additional amount. Most communities have an additional percent added to the state tax.
The City of Clifton approved an increase that will also take affect on Wednesday, making the city’s sales tax 8.5%.

New monument set into place for Mormon Springs

A new monument was set into place south of Washington last week at a new pull-o along Highway 15, adding focus to Mormon Springs, a historic camping stop on the Mormon Trail dating to the mid-1800s.
