Alvin Lee Claeys, 72, Clay Center, died July 19, 2017, in Manhattan. He was born Aug. 8, 1944, in Marysville, the son of Alvin W. and Bernice Boyte Claeys. He was raised in Barnes and graduated from Barnes High School in 1962. Mr. Claeys owned and operated a service station in Blue Rapids, managed a tire business for Rex Koppes, worked at Bud’s Tire, Hutchinson Manufacturing and Simlo. He also drove a school bus for USD 379 for 20 years. Mr. Claeys was a member of the Clay Center Christian Church. He married Linda Nester. They later divorced. On Sept. 4, 1971, he married Elaine Chartier Griffi ths. She survives. Other survivors include three daughters, Michelle Downward and husband, Larry, Marysville, Trudy Witmer and companion, Patriciah Neet, and Karen Girard and husband, Scott, all of Clay Center; a son, Devin Griffi ths and fi ancee, Heather Baker, Clay Center; a brother, Dennis Claeys and wife, Sharon, Washington; 16 grandchildren; and 12 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents. Funeral service was July 24 at the Clay Center Christian Church. Burial was in the Miltonvale City Cemetery. Memorials may be made in his name and sent in care of Neill-Schwensen-Rook Funeral Home, Clay Center, which in charge of arrangements.
