Mildred Irene Stone, 91, Topeka, died Saturday, July 1, 2017, at Brewster Place. She was born Jan. 19, 1926, in Haddam, the daughter of Elmer Ray and Maude Iva (Koehl) Stone. She attended grade and high schools in Washington and Cloud Counties and graduated from Clyde High School in 1943. She received her bachelor’s and master’s degrees from Emporia State University. Ms. Stone began her teaching career in one room schools in Washington County and continued teaching in several elementary schools in Topeka. She retired from teaching in May 1991, after teaching from 1952-1991 in the Topeka Public School System. She was active in the First Christian Church, having served on various local and state committees. Mildred traveled extensively throughout the United States and to several foreign countries. Survivors include numerous nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents; a sister, Marvene Marshall; and brothers, Elmer Stone and Laverne Stone. Funeral services was Wednesday, July 5, 2017, at Penwell-Gabel Mid- Town Chapel. Graveside services will be at 1 p.m., Thursday, July 6, at the Hickory Grove Cemetery in Washington County.
