The Washington County News had another successful year at the Kansas Press Association’s Awards of Excellence contest, though it did not retain its title as the “best mid-sized weekly in Kansas” after two years of claiming the overall sweepstakes status.

The WCN and its staff received 10 first place awards, six second place and six third place. Of those, 14 were on the editorial side (writing, photography and design), including eight first place plaques, which was the most of any newspaper in the division. This was good for third place in the division. They also received eight awards on the advertising side including two first place awards, which is its most advertising awards received by the WCN. The awards were for content from January through December, 2016.
