Merle D. Schmale, 84, Palmer, died Sunday, Nov. 9, 2014, at Mercy Regional Health Center in Manhattan, Kan. He was born on June 7, 1930, in Clay County, Kan., the son of Edwin and Ruth Laflin Schmale. He moved with his family to the Palmer community in 1938. They joined St. Paul Lutheran Church, where he was confirmed on May 27, 1945. He attended school through the eighth grade and later earned his GED. He served in the US Army during the Korean War. He was a 50 year member of the Palmer American Legion. Merle was a farmer his entire life. He raised hogs and cattle. He was married to Kay Young on Sept. 2, 1956 at Bala, Kan. She preceded him in death on Sept. 23, 2002. He was also preceded in death by brothers, Leo, Orn Dale and Dwaine, and sister Nola Bierbaum. Survivors include son Larry Schmale and wife, Karen, and daughter Mary Spence and husband, Les, all of Linn; six grandchildren; three greatgrandchildren; sisters, Betty Phillips, Clay Center, and Catherine Houser, Las Cruces, N.M.; and sister-in-law, Reva Schmale, Church Hill, Tenn. Funeral services will be at 10:30 a.m. on Friday, Nov 14 at St. Paul Lutheran Church in Palmer, Kan. Officiating the service will be Pastor Tom Sahl. Burial will be in St. Paul Lutheran Cemetery. Visitation will be from 3-8 p.m. on Thursday, Nov. 13 at Neill-Schwensen-Rook Funeral Home, Clay Center. A memorial fund has been established at St. Paul Lutheran Church.
