Darlene Emma Applegarth, 83, died Wednesday, November 5, 2014 at Heritage Care Center, Fairbury, Nebraska. Visitation was noon to 8 p.m., Friday, November 7, at Ward Funeral Home in Washington. The family received friends 5 to 7 p.m. Funeral service was 10:00 a.m., Saturday, November 8, at Bethlehem Lutheran Church, Greenleaf. Rev. Timothy Lorenz officiated. Jared Hatesohl was organist and the congregation sang, “Amazing Grace,” “How Great Thou Art” and “What a Friend We Have in Jesus.” Pallbearers were Chris May, Brandon Holt, Mick Applegarth, Kyle Applegarth, Lucas Applegarth and Brian Applegarth. Burial was in Washington City Cemetery. Darlene was born at rural Palmer, KS on January 22, 1931 to Martin and Emma (Beikmann) Mueller. On December 2, 1951, she was united in marriage to Earnest Applegarth. Darlene was a farm wife, helping with the milking and caring for the animals. She raised a garden and did the canning of the produce. Darlene also worked off the farm at various jobs, med aide at a nursing home and in a grocery store meat department. Family and their happiness was very important to her. She sewed clothing for the family, loved playing games with her children and later on the grandchildren. She enjoyed solving jigsaw and crossword puzzles. Darlene was a member of Good Shepherd Lutheran Church, Washington, and then Bethlehem Lutheran Church, Greenleaf. She taught vacation bible school and Sunday school for several years. Preceding her in death were her parents; and her husband, Earnest, on December 30, 2013; and brothers, Alvin Mueller, Clarence Mueller and Marvin Mueller. Survivors are her children, Richard (Phyllis) Applegarth, Washington, Mike Applegarth, Iowa City, Iowa, Linda (Bruce) May, Carbondale; sister, Lucille Munsterman, Wichita; sister-in-law, Ruth Mueller, Linn; six grandchildren, Mick (Jessica) Applegarth, Heather (Brandon) Holt, Brian (Colette) Applegarth, Lucas Applegarth, Kyle (Jessica) Applegarth, and Chris (Bradee) May; and eight greatgrandchildren, Shawna, Denae, Dominic, Brenna, Wyatt, Kale, Brody and Aubri. A memorial fund is established to Heritage Care Center, Fairbury, Neb., or Bethlehem Lutheran Church. Contributions may be sent in care of Ward Funeral Home.
