Robert L. Neu, 87, of Washington, KS, died Friday, Aug. 29, 2014, at the Washington County Hospital. Visitation was Tuesday, Sept. 2, from noon until 8 p.m. at Ward Funeral Home in Washington. A funeral service was held at 10 a.m., Wednesday, Sept. 3, at the Good Shepherd Lutheran Church in Washington. Pastor Judy Hill officiated. Sheila Ouellette played the organ while Reed Wilson sang “Old Rugged Cross,” “How Great Thou Art” and “The Lord’s Prayer.” The pallbearers were Robert Hogan, Ryan Kern, Jacob Neu, Robert J. Neu, Jerry Baker, Dusty Leonard, Richard Neu, Doug LeMaster and Fred LeMaster, Jr. The honorary pallbearers were Jr. Werner, Lee Gauby, Ivan Hinkle, Norman Stewart, Bill Skrabel, Robert Kohlmeier and Linus Linenberger. Burial was in St. Paul Cemetery east of Washington. Robert was born July 8, 1927, on a farm near Washington, KS, son of Jacob and Laura (Waterman) Neu. He attended Scruby School north of Washington and then Washington High School. On Nov. 6, 1949, he married Betty Schank at the Zion Lutheran Church in Hanover, KS. She survives. Robert worked as a custodian for the Washington Grade School and Washington High School. He also drove a bus. He later owned and operated Washington Electronics. He enjoyed golfing, hunting and the Kansas Jayhawks. His grandchildren and greatgrandchild, Ozzy, were especially important to him. He was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, Clyde and Wayne Neu; and a sister, Pearl Hogan. Survivors include his wife, Betty; son, Robert Mike (Lydia) Neu, Lawrence, KS; sister, Doris (Fred) LeMaster, Tulsa, OK; sister-in-law, Dorothy Neu, Washington, KS; grandchildren, Dr. Robert J. (Megan) Neu, and their son, Robert O. “Ozzy” Neu, Lawrence, Jacob Neu, Royal Oak, MI, and Angela Neu, Overland Park, KS; and close friend, Brice Leonard, Washington. Memorials may be made to the Washington Hospital, Homestead Nursing Home or Good Shepherd Lutheran Church and sent in care of Ward Funeral Home, 115 W 2nd, Washington, KS 66968.
